Deep Work Is Overrated (Sort Of)

Let me guess: you've read about how successful people do 4-hour uninterrupted focus sessions. They wake up at 5 AM, lock themselves in a room, and don't emerge until they've written a novel or solved world hunger or whatever.

Cool story. But what about those of us who have, you know, actual lives?

Kids who need breakfast. Meetings that can't be rescheduled. A brain that just refuses to focus for four straight hours. You know. Real constraints that real humans deal with.

(Also, let's be honest—does anyone actually focus for 4 hours straight? Or do they just say they do on Twitter?)

The Deep Work Cult

Don't get me wrong—Cal Newport's concept of deep work is solid. Focused, uninterrupted time on cognitively demanding tasks is valuable. I'm not arguing against that.

What I'm pushing back on is this idea that it has to be these marathon 4-hour blocks or it doesn't count.

Because here's what happened to me: I kept waiting for the "perfect" deep work conditions. I needed a whole morning free. I needed to be well-rested. I needed complete silence. I needed my coffee to be the exact right temperature. I needed Mercury to be in retrograde or whatever the productivity gurus say matters.

Result? I did almost no deep work. Because those conditions? They never existed.

The stars literally never aligned. Shocker.

The 45-Minute Revelation

Out of desperation one day, I decided to just work on my hard project for whatever time I had between meetings. Which turned out to be 45 minutes.

I figured I'd just "warm up" or "get started." You know, no pressure.

Here's what actually happened: I got into flow within 10 minutes and made real progress before my next meeting. Not as much as I would've in 4 hours, obviously. But way more than I would've made waiting for those 4 hours that never came.

So I tried it again the next day. And the next.

Turns out, five 45-minute sessions across a week gets you further than zero 4-hour sessions.

Why Shorter Sessions Actually Work

1. They're way easier to fit in

Finding 45 minutes is doable. Your brain can find pockets of time throughout the day. Finding 4 uninterrupted hours? That's basically a fantasy for most people with jobs and families.

2. The pressure helps you focus

When you know you only have 45 minutes, you don't mess around. No checking Twitter "just for a second." You dive in because the clock is ticking.

3. It's less mentally exhausting

Four hours of intense focus leaves me completely fried. 45 minutes? I can do that and still have energy for the rest of my day.

4. You can do it more often

Instead of one epic deep work session per week, I can do short sessions almost daily. Consistency beats intensity.

How to Make Short Deep Work Sessions Work

Here's what I've learned about making the most of shorter focus time:

Know what you're working on before you start

You can't waste 15 minutes of your 45-minute session figuring out what to do. Decide the night before or first thing in the morning.

Set up your environment first

Close Slack. Put your phone in another room. Open only the tabs you need. Do this before the clock starts.

Start with the hardest part

Don't ease in. Jump straight to the meaty part of your work. You can always do easy stuff later when you're tired.

Actually stop at 45 minutes

Even if you're on a roll. This sounds counterintuitive, but stopping helps you start easier next time because you know exactly where to pick up.

When You DO Have More Time

Look, if you've got a whole morning free with no interruptions? Use it. Those long sessions are still valuable when they're possible.

But don't let perfect be the enemy of good. Don't skip focused work entirely just because you can't do it the "right" way.

Some of my best work has happened in 45-minute chunks squeezed between other commitments.

The Real Lesson

Deep work isn't about the length of time. It's about the quality of attention.

45 minutes of genuine focus beats 4 hours of distracted "work" where you're constantly checking your phone and wondering if you should make another coffee.

Here's something else nobody talks about: you probably only have 5-6 truly productive hours in you each day. That's it. The rest is maintenance, meetings, and honestly... not your best work.

So instead of trying to be "on" for 8-10 hours, why not plan for 5-6 hours of real work mixed with breaks, fun stuff, and life? You'll get more done, remember your days better, and actually enjoy the process.

Stop waiting for the perfect 4-hour block that's never going to appear. Identify one hard thing you want to work on tomorrow. When you feel ready, close everything else and just start. Your brain will find the right 45 minutes.

You might surprise yourself with how much you can actually get done.
